MCA Meeting at the NYINC
January 15, 2022 - New York, NY
The MCA will hold its 2022 winter meeting at the New York International Numismatic Convention (NYINC) in New York City. The meeting will take place at noon on Saturday, January 15, in the Astor Suite I at the InterContinental New York Barclay Hotel. Jesse Kraft will give a talk on "MACO Die Shells: An Essential Stage between Model and Medal".
Die shells are amongst the most understudied components of the medallic art process and available information on them is scant. Their importance in this process, however, cannot be understated. Once an artist sculpts in clay or wax, the steps needed to transform their work into the medallic form is nothing short of incredible. In addition to discussing the various types of die shells produced by the Medallic Art Co., this talk will discuss how they were produced and used by MACO between 1907 and 2017.
Jesse Kraft is the Assistant Curator of the Americas at the American Numismatic Society, where he focuses on the coins, tokens, medals, and paper currencies of the Americas from the Age of Discovery to the present. He received his Ph.D. in United States history from the University of Delaware in 2019, but has been collecting all facets of numismatics since the age of seven.
